What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a hands-on manual therapy which approaches the body as a whole and connected unit.

Osteopaths work by looking for the underlying cause of your symptoms, as well as identifying the areas in your body that are contributing to your symptoms, or being affected by them. By re-aligning areas in your body, releasing tension, and improving mobility, Osteopaths work alongside the innate recovery processes in your body to help you function as best as possible.

Osteopaths are highly trained health professionals, and see a myriad of symptoms from lower back pain and headaches, to difficulties with digestion, pregnancy-related pain, concussion, and all manner of musculo-skeletal problems.

At our Empowered You Osteopathy Clinic, we have a particular passion for supporting you and your health in a way that empowers you with the knowledge and self-belief for leading your best life.

Our services

What can we treat and help manage?

Headaches

There are many types of headaches, and some of them can be triggered or worsened by tension or restriction in the neck, shoulders, or upper back. By releasing muscle tension, improving joint mobility, we can help relieve headache symptoms that stem from these areas.

Muscle Strains

Your muscles are continuously working throughout every day in order to meet your needs. Sometimes muscles can become injured, fatigued, or tighten up over time, often leading to physical discomfort, and decreased strength or flexibility. By releasing tight muscles, improving their blood supply, and releasing extra load that they may be under, we can help your muscles recover so that you can continue to lead an active life.

Lower Back Pain

Many people experience lower back pain at some point during their life. It can be caused by a sporting injury, heavy lifting, the later stages of pregnancy, posture, driving long distances, and a multitude of other reasons. By realigning the body, releasing muscle tension, decompressing joints, improving mobility, and addressing any other areas that might be contributing to the problem, we can help relieve lower back pain so that it doesn’t in the way of you living life.

Visceral Osteopathy

Your internal organs (viscera) are working 24/7 to keep your body living and functioning. Sometimes they can become a bit stuck or overwhelmed, or even be impacted by your mental health, external injuries, or surgery. By helping your viscera move harmoniously together, and releasing any areas of tension that might be impacting them, we can support your body to function easier on the inside as well as the outside.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time of significant change for the female body. Alongside a growing baby, your body is also adjusting to a changing center of gravity, joints becoming more mobile, organs slowly being displaced, and a myriad of other symptoms that come with pregnancy like lower back pain and difficulty breathing. By gently releasing areas of tension, improving mobility through your ribcage, and aligning your pelvis, we can help you feel more comfortable in your body, as well as helping prepare your body for childbirth.

Infants & Children

Birth is a major event for babies. Going from the warm and nourishing womb, and out into the world where they are suddenly feeding and breathing for themselves, is a big adjustment. Sometimes babies need a bit of support to help them transition to their new life, and sometimes they also need a bit of support to recover from the physical strains of childbirth itself.  As children get older, they can also sometimes need a bit of help adjusting to their growing bodies. By using gentle, child-friendly treatment, we can help release areas of tension and help your child feel more comfortable and capable in their body.

Postpartum

Postpartum is a significant period of transition, especially for first-time parents. For birthing parents, the efforts of childbirth can be intense, and can take a toll on the body. Nursing can likewise present its own challenges, some of which we can support you with. But for all parents, both birthing and non-birthing, tending to an infant can bring its own strains and challenges (especially those moments where your baby doesn’t want to be put down!). By re-balancing your body after childbirth, and releasing any tight or restricted areas from nursing or baby-wearing, we can help support every parent on their postpartum journey.

Senior Citizens

The body can be amazingly resilient, but after a lifetime of injuries and various wear and tear it can often do with a bit of support. While there are many health conditions that we can’t treat directly, like osteoarthritis, we can help your body to function as best as it can with the cards life has dealt you, and support you in living the life you wish to live.

Stress

The body is interconnected in many wonderful and complex ways, and what affects the mind can often have an effect on the physical body too. During periods of stress you might find your shoulders and neck feeling tense, your nervous system feeling “on-edge”, headaches, difficulty sleeping, or even digestive upset. During times of high-stress your body can also get stuck in ‘fight or fright’ mode, which can hamper your body’s ability to restore itself. By releasing areas of tension, and helping balance and calm your nervous system, we can support you through periods of high stress, as well as help you recover afterwards.

Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle form of osteopathy that interacts with subtle patterns of movement throughout your body. It can also be used effectively to help your body recover from head injuries, and in treating babies and other people whose bodies can become easily overwhelmed by more intense forms of manual therapy. Cranial osteopathy is often described as ‘cranio-sacral therapy’ in other modalities, and can be useful for helping support the nervous system and the body’s recovery processes.

Injury & Disability

Various life events can impact your body to either temporarily or permanently hinder your physical capabilities. While trauma can take a significant toll on the body, your body is also capable of remarkable resilience, and will do everything it can to find new ways of achieving your physical goals. This ability to compensate for injury or disability can often be incredibly valuable, but sometimes it can get in the way of recovery. By supporting your body in managing alternate ways of moving, and re-aligning your body to prevent complications from temporary injuries, we can help you feel more comfortable and capable in your body, and keep you in the right track for getting the best out of your physical self.

Warrant of Fitness

Starting to feel a few niggles? Osteopathy is a great option to nip pain in the bud before it snowballs into a bigger problem. Just like it’s important to give your car a regular service and WOF, giving your body the same care can keep you feeling comfortable and capable in your body for longer. Part of our ethos is to also support you with the knowledge to feel empowered in your own self-care, so alongside hands-on treatment we can go through stretches and other exercises to make looking after your body at home that much easier.
